Meeting of the Mayor’s Task Force on Smoking In Public

December 8, 2003

A meeting of the Mayor’s Task Force on Smoking in Public was held on December 8, 2003 in Conference Room E, Lawrence Memorial Hospital.  The meeting commenced at 3:00 P.M.  Members present:  Scott Hazelitt, Dave Hiebert, John Hiebert, Judy Keller, Dave Kingsley, Rita Madl, and Chuck Magerl.  Also present:  Carolyn Tadin, Douglas County Department of Health Intern and 2 guests, and Toni Wheeler, a member of the City of Lawrence Legal Department.

The minutes of the November meeting were amended to reflect that Scott Hazelitt would not be serving on the Health Issues committee.

The bulk of the meeting was allocated to the Health Issues Committee for the purpose of presenting research pertaining to the health effects of environmental tobacco smoke.  Dr. John Hiebert presented a set of slides and discussed the health impact of second hand smoke.

There was some initial discussion about questions.  Dr. Hiebert asked that questions be asked after he had the opportunity to make his entire presentation.  There was some disagreement about this procedure but it was eventually accepted as the protocol to be followed in the meeting.

The entire period was utilized for the Health Issues committee presentation.  It was agreed that any time needed for completion of the presentation would be allocated at the next meeting.

It was agreed by the Task Force Members that a request for a study session on March 31, 2004 would be submitted to the City Commission.

Each committee will be responsible for completing the appropriate section of the report to be presented on March 31, 2004.

It was decided that the next meeting would be held on January 8, 2004 at 5:00 P.M. in Conference Room E, Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

The meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully Submitted,

David E. Kingsley
