Re:      Appointments to the Historic Resources Commission.

Introduction/ Discussion:

There is one position to be filled on the Historic Resources Commission.  While the position vacated was that of a historian, we currently have two commissioners that have a background in history.  To date, I have been unable to identify a professional historian who has the available time to commit to the HRC.

Chapter 22-201 specifies the composition of the HRC.

22-201 COMPOSITION OF HISTORIC RESOURCES COMMISSION.

The Historic Resources Commission shall consist of seven (7) members, residents of the City, all of whom shall be appointed by the Mayor and approved by the City Commission.  The Mayor shall make every reasonable effort to appoint persons with a demonstrated interest in historic preservation or architecture of the City.  The Commission shall be composed of the following: Three (3) members shall be a diversity of preservation-related professionals, as recognized by the relevant standards of their respective profession, such as architect, architectural historian, archeologist, historian, landscape architect, and planner; four (4) members shall be a diversity of either professionals or lay persons with demonstrated interest, knowledge or training in fields closely related to historic preservation, such as history, architecture, landscape architecture, architectural history, archeology, planning, real estate, law, finance, building trades, urban design, and geography.  At least one (1) preservation professional shall be on each subcommittee. (Ord. 5950, Sec. 1)

I have discussed with the planning director the benefits of having an additional architect on the HRC.  (1) The number of technical projects is increasing and architectural knowledge of design and construction is essential for sound decisions; and (2) an additional architect would allow for the architects on the commission to rotate on and off of the Architectural Review Committee.  This sub-committee demands a larger time commitment than the typical HRC position.

Based on this information, I have met with and been in contact with Mike Sizemore.  He is a licensed architect and is interested in the HRC. (See attached resume.)

Recommendation/Action:

I am requesting consideration of the appointment to the Historic Resources Commission.
