Lawrence, Kansas
WHEREAS: The Lawrence Public Library provides equity of access to library users no matter their age, income and socioeconomic background; and
WHEREAS: The Lawrence Public Library plays a vital role in providing people with the resources they need to live, learn, and work in the 21st century; and
WHEREAS: The Lawrence Public Library is a changing and dynamic place and librarians are the ultimate search engine, helping people of all ages find the educational, self-help, and lifelong learning information they need in print and online; and
WHEREAS: The Lawrence Public Library is a key player in the national discourse on intellectual freedom, equity of access, and narrowing the “digital divide;” and
WHEREAS: Awareness and support must be increased for libraries and librarians by raising their visibility in a positive context and by communicating clearly and strongly why libraries are both unique and valuable and how librarians provide the information literacy skills that people need to succeed throughout life; and
WHEREAS: Libraries, librarians, and supporters across America are celebrating National Library Week April 18-24, 2004; and
WHEREAS: The Lawrence Public Library is celebrating its Centennial Year of service to the Lawrence community with a series of events during National Library Week;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mike Rundle, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim April 18 – 24, 2004 to be
and congratulate Lawrence Public Library on 100 years of service to the citizens of Lawrence. I encourage all residents to take advantage of the variety of library resources available at the Lawrence Public Library. I also urge them to thank librarians for providing valuable services and making information accessible to all.
