LAWRENCE PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD

March 9th, 2004

 

 

Board members present:  Chair Alice Ann Johnston, Tom Bracciano, Richard Konzem and Bill Penny.  Absent:  Vice Chair Sharon Spratt.  Staff present:  Fred DeVictor, Ernie Shaw, Roger Steinbrock Jimmy Gibbs and Lori Madaus.  Guests present:  Baker student, Luke Harris, Sesquicentennial Commission representatives Mary Burchill and Clenece Hills.

 

Meeting was brought to order by Chair Johnston.  Minutes of the February 10th meeting were approved on a motion by Konzem, 2nd by Penny.

 

Jimmy Gibbs and Lori Madaus from the aquatics division presented the National Recreation and Park Association Excellence in Aquatics award they received at the NRPA Aquatics Conference in February.  The recognition will be presented to the City Commission in April.  The Board officially commended the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department staff indicating “they were proud of this accomplishment and recognition and thank them for their hard work to receive this national award in aquatics.”

 

Hills and Burchill presented a report of names for the site of the future plaza at Clinton Lake and asked the Board to support the name “Sesquicentennial Point” for this area.  After discussion about progress of the plaza project the Board on a motion by Bracciano, 2nd by Penny voted to support the name Sesquicentennial Point and recommend it be forwarded to the City Commission for their consideration.

 

Hecker updated the Board on park projects, Shaw reported the summer brochure would be out April 4th when enrollment will start.  Steinbrock indicated he organized a committee to submit an application for the NRPA Gold Medal award program for the department.

 

Staff gave the Board a tour of the South Park Recreation Center and discussed the improvements that were needed to the structure.

 

            Meeting adjourned at 1:15P.M.  Next meeting April 13th at the Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive.
