LAWRENCE SISTER CITIES ADVISORY BOARD - MINUTES
March 10, 2004 – Max Kade Center
Present: Trish Bransky, Kathleen Hodge, Bill Keel, Michael Kennedy, Graham Kreicker, Beth Reiber, Gina Ross, Bob Schumm, Jodi Simek, Andrew Tsubaki, Atsuko Wada
Absent: Sheila Immel, Jon Josserand, Lisa Patterson, Karen Swisher,.
Minutes: Approved as moved by Kreicker; seconded by Bransky.
Treasurer’s Report: Simek presented the monthly profit and loss statement and balance sheet. Simek reported having received several membership and scholarship donations checks from Bransky. Simek also explained that the numbers for the scholarship and travel accounts were inaccurate and Schumm has those numbers. Approved as moved by Keel. Kennedy seconded, motion passed.
Hodge: She had received the Membership binder with all the forms but hasn’t had time to update the database. She offered to bring her computer to the next meeting and demonstrate how the system works. She will give to Nancy Bjorge the art piece that the Board will present as a gift to the City of Eutin this coming June. The piece is presently housed at her house. The Board wants to ship this piece along with Bjorge’s pieces that will be going to Eutin for the show.
Ross moved to nominate Hodge the Chairperson of the Membership subcommittee. Keel seconded, motion passed.
Kennedy: He reported that about 26 people are going to Hiratsuka this Summer.
Keel: He said that Friends of Eutin would endorse the Lawrence Children’s Choir visit to Eutin. LCC will visit Lübeck, Berlin and Köln. LCC will make their own travel and lodging arrangements.
Baron: He proposed to have some photographs from Eutin displayed at the Public Library during the Sesquicentennial festivities during September. Tsubaki will check how many Hiratsuka’s pictures he can get so they can also be displayed at the Public Library. There was a discussion about how much it would cost to frame some of these pictures for the display.
Tsubaki: He will check with the Spencer Museum to see if they agree to display the two Japanese masks (received as a gift from Japan) during the visit from the Japanese delegation this September.
Baron and Tsubaki will get together to nail down the picture’s display, framing, space, etc.
Presents to take to Germany.
Baron passed around a sterling silver jayhawk and a sunflower pins from the Goldmaker Jewelry Store. If the Board buys 10 pins, Goldmaker will sell them to the Board for $20.50. The Board liked the Jayhawk pin best. Kreicker moved to have Baron procured enough Jayhawk pins; Ross seconded, motion approved.
Official gift to the City of Eutin from the City of Lawrence will be the Origami piece made by Nancy Bjorge.
Gift to the mayor of Eutin.
Baron: He passed around a picture of a metal representation of Prairie Grass by Don Havener, art professor. Kreicker will check with Swisher and see if somebody in Haskell has some Indian art to suggest as a present. The Board will make a decision later.
Schumm: He proposed to commission a person to buy a present for the mayor and the gift should be within a range of $50.00 to $100.00.
April 28th Membership Party.
Kennedy: He will talk to Zen Zero restaurant about making Japanese food for the Party.
Schumm: He will bring the German food.
Kreicker: He will bring the left over wine, pop, and supplies from the February party.
Hodge: She will mail the invitations to the party the second week of April.
Gala dinner for Japanese and German delegations this Fall.
Kreicker moved to print 500 (17X22) posters of the “Sisters” painting by Nancy Marshall. It will cost $868.00 ($1.74 each); Keel seconded, motion passed.
Hodge and Schumm presented a $14,000.00 budget for the Gala dinner. After review by the members it was moved by Keel, seconded by Ross and Tsubaki that the budget be presented to the City Commission along with our request for $5,000.00 in funding for the event. Motioned passed.
