Proclamation

Lawrence, Kansas

 

WHEREAS:   The enactment by the Congress of the United States of “An Act to Organize the Territories of Nebraska and Kansas” in May 1854, led the first anti-slavery settlers to the banks of the Kansas River to establish Lawrence as a community committed to the admission of Kansas to the Union as a free state; and

 

WHEREAS:   The Lawrence Sesquicentennial Commission, in partnership with many groups in the City of Lawrence and Douglas County, Kansas, has planned a series of events to recall the spirit of the founders and inspire the people of this community to learn from their example; and

 

WHEREAS:   The beginning of these celebrations will be the dedication on May 30, 2004 of a Heritage Garden at Hobbs Park, planned by the Heritage Committee of the Lawrence Sesquicentennial Commission;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mike Rundle, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim May 30 – September 19 to be observed as

 

LAWRENCE SESQUICENTENNIAL SUMMER”

 

and encourage the people of Lawrence to take an active part in all of the events planned for this period and to welcome all visitors who will join in the celebrations.
