Subject: Lawrence Farmers Market City Proposal
Dear Commissioners,
Due to current waterline construction, The Lawrence Farmers Market Board of Directors has been assessing the possibility of a temporary relocation to Lot #8 at 8th and New Hampshire Streets.
We held discussions with Mike Rundle, David Schauner, Mike Wildgen, members of DLI, Mike Riling, and construction project Engineers.
Out of respect for concerns expressed by neighboring businesses in opposition to Tuesday Thursday market hours, and the recent loss of 67 long term parking spaces near that site, we respectfully decline the pursuit of that particular site.
However, it is our hope that the current city commissioners will participate in a 2004 evaluation process to identify and implement a new location for the Lawrence Farmers Market. This location should provide growth potential for the market.
At the June 15 City Commission meeting, we will outline the limitations we experience at our current location. We will address in detail the current and future growth of the Lawrence Farmers Market. It is our goal to be a destination point for the positive enhancement of the Lawrence community.
We request the following of this commission:
1. Participate in a task force involving Farmers Market Board and Vendor members. This task force will evaluate criteria and establish options for relocation and permanent improvements.
2. Assist in a decision that benefits both the Lawrence Farmers Market and the City of Lawrence.
3. Work toward implementation of decisions in the 2005 season.
Respectfully submitted,
Lawrence Farmers Market Board of Directors
