RE: |
Project No. 1-CP1-198(S) 6th Street, Champion Lane to the SLT
|
Construction has recently begun on the new four-lane roadway for 6th Street west of Wakarusa Drive. The contractor is Hamm Companies from Perry, Kansas. Currently, they are constructing the new waterline along the north side of 6th Street, clearing, grubbing, and installing some storm sewer. They have also begun to move dirt in order to construct the detour along the south side of 6th.
In the coming months the contractor plans to install all the storm sewer and construct the reinforced concrete box. They also hope to complete the construction of the detour road in order to lay storm sewer through the winter. The detour will run approximately from the SLT ramps to Congressional Drive. The contractor hopes to have the detour completed by November 1. But one note of caution, the detour is constructed of asphalt super pave materials. The oil needed for this pavement requires very warm temperatures. For example, there have been four days in August where the contractor could not place asphalt due to the cool temperatures. It is anticipated that the detour will be in place until late next summer. At that time, the detour road will be removed and the contractor will begin construction on the south half of 6th Street west of Wakarusa.
The contractor plans to begin construction of Wakarusa Drive from 6th Street to Overland Drive late next spring and continue through the summer. Hamm also plans to work on the widening of the north side of 6th Street between Wakarusa Drive and Folks Road next spring and summer. The widening of the south half of 6th Street between Wakarusa Drive and Folks Road will occur next fall.
KDOT plans to remove snow this winter on either the detour or 6th Street, whichever is open to traffic.
