WHEREAS: The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded on October 11, 1890, with the objectives to perpetuate the memory and spirit of the men and women who achieved American Independence; to carry out the injunction of Washington in his farewell address to the American people; and to cherish, maintain, and extend the institutions of American freedom; and
WHEREAS: The local chapter, Betty Washington, of the Daughters of the American Revolution will celebrate 109 years in October and has 65 active members; and
WHEREAS: The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution initiated Constitution Week in 1956 and promotes the study of American History; and
WHEREAS: The Constitution of the United States of America is the safeguard of our liberties and the champion of our freedoms; and
WHEREAS: The purposes of the observation and celebration of Constitution Week are:
· To emphasize the responsibility of protecting and defending the Constitution and preserving it for posterity;
· To understand that the Constitution is our great heritage and the foundation of our lives; and
· To study the historical events which occurred during 1787
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mike Rundle, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim the week of September 17 – 23 as
