Lawrence, Kansas
WHEREAS: Public transportation is making a real difference in the daily lives of individuals and households by giving over a million rides in Lawrence, Kansas; Public transportation is vital to the quality of life and economic well-being of all citizens of Lawrence; and
WHEREAS: Employees, students, senior citizens, people with disabilities, and those unable to afford an automobile use public transportation to gain access to jobs, schools, medical facilities, and other fundamental services; and,
WHEREAS: Public transportation enables people from all walks of life to access opportunities that allow them to accomplish what is important to them, making the community stronger and more vibrant; and,
WHEREAS: The Lawrence Transit System is an excellent example of public transportation having received an Award of Excellence for meeting the criteria of highest percentage increase in ridership, early closeout of triennial review findings, and low number of open grants in the Kansas Urban Transit Program; and
WHEREAS: The Lawrence Transit System and the American Public Transportation Association have declared October 7, 2004, to be COMMUNITIES IN MOTION DAY and have called upon all citizens to join in a nationwide effort to promote public transportation’s benefit;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mike Rundle, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim Thursday, October 7, 2004 as
and call upon all citizens to support public transportation and COMMUNITIES IN MOTION DAY by riding the “T” on Thursday during the free ridership day.
