Proclamation

Lawrence, Kansas

 

WHEREAS:      The Lawrence After School Alliance is a joint venture of The Lawrence Public Schools, The Boys and Girls Club, and several other community partners; and

 

WHEREAS:      The Alliance operates vital before and after school programming for approximately one thousand enrolled grade school age children at eight locations; and

 

WHEREAS:      These programs provide a safe place with caring adults for children to go between the time when school gets out and a working parent arrives home; and

 

WHEREAS:      These programs offer academic, social, recreational, and cultural arts program elements to all participants; and

 

WHEREAS:      Funding for these programs come from several sources including service fees paid by the families whose children attend, city, county, and federal resources through grant and foundation funding, and contributions from businesses and individuals in our community; and

 

WHEREAS:      On Thursday, October 14 from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. a Walk for After School Programs event will occur to help raise awareness and funding for these eight sites.  Children and parents from each site will participate in this event and raise money by recruiting sponsors for the walk;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mike Rundle, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim Thursday, October 14, 2004 as
