August 11, 2004 Minutes
Lawrence Arts Commission meeting was called to order by Damro at 6:30 PM
Present: Damro, Henry, Satz, Hotvedt, Merrill, Tilford, Ridgway, Kellas, Tubbs
A and B Presentation: Janet Good and a team of artists from the East Lawrence Neighborhood Assoc. made a presentation re: mural in Hobbs Park (stadium). There was a sketch of the mural for the commissioners to observe the plan in detail. Several members of the neighborhood were in attendance to show support for the mural project.
A time line for the mural was outlined: start in September, 2004; completed by mid-October, 2004.
Several questions from the commissioners ensued. Merrill moved that the Commission should see the actual verbiage of the signs involved in the presentation of the mural before sending our approval to the City Commission. Seconded by Tilford. Approved unanimously.
The proposed mural project and the presentation was praised by the commissioners.
Remarks from the Chair: Damro will be out of town for one month; vice Chair, Henry, will conduct September meeting & compile agenda.

4. Orphan Sculpture, Ridgway, Henry: A request from the Master Gardeners of Douglas County has been received for a piece of sculpture to be placed on the County Fair Grounds. Tubbs will investigate the legality of that; also stated that Public Works & Parks & Recreation would have to approve.
Ridgway moved, & Hotvedt seconded, to place orphan sculpture, Steel Wedge, at the intersection/roundabout of 19th Street & Barker; that Landmark be placed with the Master Gardeners; and that Tango be sold at public auction. Motion carried with two votes opposed.
Merrill motion to develop a masterplan for orphaned sculpture died without a second. Satz recommended that policy for placement of city-owned sculpture should be developed.
