Recognition

Lawrence, Kansas

 

WHEREAS:   In 1984, the Emergency Services Council put together a task force on hunger in Douglas County; and

 

WHEREAS:   The community responded to this discovered need  and established the Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen (L.I.N.K) with the goal of providing a pleasant, safe place for the hungry or lonely to share a free, nutritious meal and the companionship of one another; and

 

WHEREAS:   L.I.N.K. provides a unique opportunity for diverse groups and individuals to come together and work for a common concern; and

 

WHEREAS:   The L.I.N.K served its first meal of beef stew and fruit on February 14, 1985 to six people; and

 

WHEREAS:   Over the last twenty years, L.I.N.K. has served more than 362,000 meals to hungry people and serves approximately 115 – 150 people each day it is open;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mike Rundle, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, along with my fellow Commissioners, do hereby recognize February 14, 2005 as the 20th Anniversary of the Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen and urge all citizens of Lawrence to join in this recognition.
