Please include the following item on the City Commission Consent Agenda for consideration at the March 8, 2005 meeting:

Amendment to Engineering Contract – Kasold Drive from Peterson to the KTA.

This project is on the City’s 5-Year Plan with KDOT.  The original engineering contract with PEC (Professional Engineering Consultants) included the design of a 5-lane section.  PEC has provided eight alternative designs and held a project open house.  The design selected will require additional engineering for the roundabouts and a landscape plan.  The original engineering contract was for $162,460.  The amendment is for $44,000, bringing the total to $206,460.

Revised alternatives presented to City Commission.

Direction provided to proceed with Option R-1.

Project Status. The project is scheduled for construction with KDOT in January 2007; however, we are working towards an earlier letting date (if possible) in 2006 to coincide with the reconstruction of the bridge over the KTA.

Project Funding. The construction will be paid 80% by KDOT and 20% by the City.  Engineering, right-of-way, and utility relocation costs are at the City’s expense.  Estimated construction cost - $1.9 million.

Project Description.  Alternative Option R-1 can be viewed at: http://www.lawrencepublicworks.org/kasold_north/Alt_R1.jpg    Briefly, the road will be a two-lane facility with roundabouts at Tillerman Drive and Grand Vista Drive.  A wide median will be constructed with access at each intersection.

Action Request Public Works staff requests approval from the City Commission to authorize the City Manager to sign the Amendment for Engineering Services with PEC for the design of Kasold Drive from Peterson to the KTA, bringing the total contract to an amount of $206,460.

Respectfully submitted,
