March 8, 2005

Guest: Eileen Smith (Building-Integrated Photo-Voltaics)

Summary of Eileen’s presentation:  Eileen suggests the installation of building-integrated photovoltaics [BI-PV] in downtown Lawrence; the creation of a local renewable solar electric Cooperative; development of a local BI-PV Manufacturing Museum that will produce and install BI-PVs. Earth Day Parade:

Dickie distributed contact lists for RRCAB members to call to inform folks about this year’s parade and solicit support. Mollie will send the Earth Day flyer to RRCAB members. March 18^th is the deadline for folks to complete their calls and get back to Dickie with any details. Kevin will call the fire department to inquire about helmet give-aways.

Energy Conservation Strategies Memo

We are slated to appear at the City Commission meeting TUESDAY, March 12, 2005. This is our opportunity to make a strong case! Everyone that can come to the meeting should come to the meeting! RRCAB members who attend the meeting should be prepared to speak to the memo, and explain it’s reasoning and purpose to the City Commission. Who will attend? Kevin, Shannon, Laura, Cindy, John, Dickie.  Dickie will also call Alan Bowes and ask him to speak. Laura will send an announcement out to her local listserve to drum up support. Shannon will invite Russel Rudy. John Craft will also be at the meeting to speak to the Building Code discussion. RRCAB members are encouraged to stay and participate in this part of the meeting, as well.

WRR Update:

• Compost has tested low enough in Clopyralid levels to warrant public distribution.  A compost give away is schedule April 7-9 at the 11^th Street Compost Facility. 

• Question: Will the Wal-Mart recycling center be shutting down during the moving of the store? It is agreed that this is an important issue, and the Board requests that Mollie find out the answer to this question and that staff make appropriate arrangements RE: public notification & alternatives.  NOTE:  Mollie checked with WalMart and there will be no lapse in services during the transition to a new facility.

• Kudos to HHW staff for a job well done. A local SQG was given tremendous assistance by WRR staff in dealing with hazardous waste. Good Job Staff!

• A question is asked about Hillcrest elementary using paper lunch trays? Is there a recycling or composting option or maybe a waste reduction option? NOTE: Mollie noted that our compost facility permit would need to be amended if we were to accept paper lunch trays with food residual on them.  Also, these items would be considered contamination in either our OCC or ONP recycling containers.
