Helmet Fair – an XL success
Division Chief Rob Kort estimates that 1500 people visited the Helmet Fair on Saturday, May 14. In addition to providing individual helmet fittings and providing 475 helmets to youth, the event covered topics from “rules of the road” to safe swimming and water safety. Event attendees received more than information - hands-on activities included a bike rodeo and seat belt checks and free food and drinks were provided. The River City Lions Club distributed 80 refurbished bicycles. Lawrence Transit System provided a free ridership day and hosted an educational booth at the event where children and their families were able to tour a “T” fixed route bus. Visitors to the booth were able to learn how to load their bikes on the bus’ bike racks, view an enlarged transit map, and pick up route maps and promotional items. Rachel Cornish, Transit Marketing Coordinator, was in attendance to provide route planning and answer questions about the “T” services. The free ridership day yielded 1008 rides. The Aquatics Division of Parks and Recreation reported the opportunity to provide safety info to an attentive audience was valuable. Lifeguards provided safety information for swimming at pools/lakes/ponds. Aquatics staff also fielded questions and provided information on pool opening, hours and lessons.
Waste Reduction and Recycling Division provided education and activities about recycling and waste prevention at New York Elementary School on May 12, 2005.
