On March 14, 2005, the Kansas Department of Transportation, Office of Public Transportation, requested that Lawrence submit our project proposal for FY 2006 state grant funds that would become available on July 1, 2005.  The funds are available for any transit project, which will benefit transit service for elderly, persons with disabilities and/or the general public.  These funds carry a requirement that the public be afforded the opportunity to request a public hearing regarding the proposed use of the state funding.  A notice was placed in the local newspaper outlining the steps in requesting such a hearing on April 24, 2005.  The Lawrence Transit System did not receive such a request.  Therefore, I would like to request that the City Commission authorize the mayor to sign the agreement with KDOT for $250,986 for bus shelter and bus stop amenities, bus cut-outs, and operating expenses for state fiscal year 2006.
