Lawrence, Kansas
WHEREAS: One June 25, 1855, the First Baptist Church of Lawrence was organized with seven people, making it the oldest continuous Baptist Church in Kansas; and
WHEREAS: Samuel Jones, one of the original seven members of the church, lost his life during the unsettled time of Quantrill’s Raid; and
WHEREAS: In 1867, the members moved into the basement of their own building under construction on a lot at Kentucky and Henry (8th Street) Streets in Lawrence, Kansas; and
WHEREAS: On the 100th anniversary of the founding of the church, a new Christian Education Building was dedicated, which remains at the corner today; and
WHEREAS: Deterioration of the building in 1974 made the sanctuary unsafe and it was razed in July, 1976, which made way for the current location on Kasold Drive;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Dennis “Boog” Highberger, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby recognize June 25 as the
“150TH ANNIVERSARY OF FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH”
