Re: History of Fire Station No. 4
The current station located at 2819 Stonebarn Terrace was donated to the city by the developer in 1982. The building consisted of a two story “Stone Barn.” The building was renovated and an apparatus area added to accommodate a quint, medic unit and hazardous materials unit with a crew of six. The upper story consists of dormitories with the ground level serving as the office, day room, kitchen and dining area. This location was appropriate at the time to serve the south and southwest portions of the city.
Due to the city’s growth in those areas and as part of the Public Safety Plan a new station (Station No. 5 – 1911 Stewart Ave) is being constructed and the relocation of Station No. 4 to 2727 Wakarusa Drive is necessary to meet the response time parameters in those areas.
At the time of donation the surrounding residential area was advised that if the building use was ever changed from a fire station the new use must be compatible with the neighborhood.
