MEMORANDUM

July 15, 2005

To:       Mike Wildgen, City Manager

From:  W. Ronald Olin, Chief of Police

Ref.:    Recent Training Activities

In response to your recent inquiry concerning police training, we have compiled the following information.

·   As part of he basic police recruit academy classes, all officers on the department would have completed the following courses as part of their basic police training:

            Interaction with special populations.

            Juvenile intervention and prevention strategies.

            Juvenile law.

            Behavior management and crisis intervention.

            Investigation of sexual offenses.

Investigation of child abuse and neglect.

            Community policing.

·   During mini-academies from 2002, the department offered all officers further instruction on the following topics:

Boys & Girls Club—getting kids involved.

            Sexual harassment.

            Juvenile and elder abuse.

            Protecting the elderly.

            Project safe neighborhoods.

            Protection from abuse/stalking.

            Legal updates.

The art of de-escalation (with mentally ill).

These are just some of the topics covered in recent in-service training and do not include the specialized training that we send our officers to each year.  The department has been in discussions with Bert Nash to provide additional training to officers.  The training was scheduled earlier in the year and canceled at the request of Bert Nash officials.  We continue to try to find an agreeable time for their presentation.  You may also be interested to know that we were selected by SRS to administer a $50,000 grant for training officers and SRS officials in handling special populations.  The training associated with that grant was completed as well.

If I may provide additional information, please let me know.
