To the Lawrence City Commission

From Clenece Hills, president, Lawrence Sesquicentennial Commission

Mid-year Funding Request

This request is a formal summary of the letter, and the meeting on July 20th with the Lawrence City Commission regarding a birthday concert for the City of Lawrence on September 18, 2005.

It is the hope of the Lawrence Sesquicentennial Commission that a birthday concert on the third Sunday of each September will become an annual event, acknowledging Lawrence’s birthday, building toward its bicentennial in 2054.

To date, no formal events have been regularly scheduled to acknowledge Lawrence’s birthday each year.

This is an unmet need in our community.  Many citizens move to Lawrence each year and are unfamiliar with the history and traditions of our city.  This birthday concert will call attention to our history and traditions every year on the third Sunday of September.

The concert for 2005 will be scheduled for Sunday, September 18, 2005, 4 p.m., in South Park by the Lawrence City Band.  In subsequent years it is hoped that the birthday concert will be held at Sesquicentennial Point.

This request is in the amount of $4,000.00 for the September 18, 2005 concert.

Respectfully submitted,

Clenece Hills

President, Lawrence Sesquicentennial Commission
