RE:

Temporary Sale, Possession and Consumption of Cereal Malt Beverages at South Park for “Love from Lawrence

“Love from Lawrence”, a local non-profit entity recently created by Lawrence residents  Dana Seiger and Karin Drees, is planning an event to raise funds for victims of Hurricane Katrina.  The event organizers have reserved the west side of South Park for Saturday October 22, 2005, and is requesting permission to sell, possess and consume cereal malt beverages in South Park on that date between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.  Event organizers are proposing to have a small beer garden as part of the fundraiser.  Access to the beer garden will be controlled by event staff and any cereal malt beverage sold in the beer garden area will be required to remain in that same area.

While the possession and consumption of cereal malt beverages in South Park (except for the Center building) is currently allowed in City Code, an ordinance allowing the temporary sale is required.  As such, I have attached a copy of Ordinance 7934 for the Commission’s consideration.  This ordinance authorizes the sale, possession and consumption of cereal malt beverages on October 22, 2005 in South Park on the west side during the hours of 11:00 am and 6:00 p.m., provided such temporary sale, possession and consumption are otherwise consistent with the Code of the City of Lawrence, state law, and the rules and regulations of the Parks & Recreation Department.
