City of Lawrence

TRAFFIC ENGINEERING DIVISION

MEMORANDUM

TO:

Charles Soules, Director of Public Works

Terese Gorman, City Engineer

FROM:

David Woosley, Transportation/Traffic Engineer

DATE:

27 September 2005

SUBJECT:

Lawrence Avenue between Applegate Court & Bob Billings Parkway

At the June 6, 2005, Traffic Safety Commission meeting, the Commission reviewed a request (along with a petition with 38 signatures) to prohibit parking along the west side of Lawrence Avenue from 150 feet north of Bob Billings Parkway to Applegate Court (parking is already prohibited from Bob Billings Parkway, north 150 feet).  Two citizens spoke in favor of the request, and one adjacent to the affected area, spoke in opposition to it.  One commissioner fully supported the request; however, others were concerned where the vehicles would relocate and that removing the parking would increase the speed of traffic. The commission voted 4-1-1 to recommend denial of the request (one commissioner could not decide).

The neighborhood contact subsequently requested that this item not be forwarded to the City Commission until after school started in the fall (there is not as much of a problem during the summer since many of the students are not in town).
