CITY MANAGER’S REPORT

Week ending October 11, 2005

Certificate of Recognition

As part of the recent recognition of the City of Lawrence as one of “America’s 100 Healthiest Communities”, the attached Certificate from Governor Sebelius was issued to recognize Lawrence and Douglas County for “their commitment to placing youth at the center of the community’s policy priorities”.

Transit Drivers Recognized

Two Lawrence Transit System bus drivers, Roger Lee and Jerome Younger, were recently mentioned in an article in the September, 2005 issue of the Kansas Government Journal for their assistance in transport efforts in the emergency zone of Hurricane Katrina.

Inspection Results

A recent letter from the Corps of Engineers commended several members of the Public Works Department: Kevin Brock, Dale Mooney, Mike Scruggs, and Terry Harmon, for their “diligence and positive attitude” and efforts to sustain the “very good condition” of the City’s flood control unit (the river levee).  A September 14, 2005 inspection of the levee by the Corps and these City staff members found it in “very good condition” with no major deficiencies, some minor deficiencies, and most old deficiencies noted in the last inspection corrected.

Another Positive Inspection

A recent public water supply inspection by the District Engineer for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) found the City’s facilities and system to be “well operated and maintained”.  Special thanks were given to Utilities Department staff: Keith Whealy, Dave Brewer, Charlie Gray and Peggy Thomas for their courtesy and assistance during the inspection.
