Proclamation

Lawrence, Kansas

 

WHEREAS:   On October 24, United Nations Day, we commemorate the founding of the United Nations in 1945 and recognize its many contributions to advancing peace and human rights around the world; and

 

WHEREAS:   The United States remains committed to the high ideals of the U.N. as stated in its charter: "To save succeeding generations from the scourge of war . . . to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights . . . and to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom." and

 

WHEREAS:   The United Nations Association - USA of Lawrence urges Lawrence residents to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations and is organizing community events to celebrate this occasion.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Dennis “Boog” Highberger, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim October 24, 2005 to be

 

“UNITED NATIONS DAY”

 

and urge all citizens of this community to continue working together in advancing the ideals of the United Nations in Lawrence and Douglas County.
