Fire Medical Station No. 4

2819 Stonebarn Terrace

Current Status:

During the April 7, 2004 City Commission study session, the Fire/Medical Department briefed the commission on a request for consideration of relocating Station No. 4 as outlined in the 1996 Public Safety Plan.  Staff received direction at that time from the Commission to move forward with the construction of Station No. 4 to be located in the 2100 block of Wakarusa.  This relocation will provide a reduction in response times to better meet the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standards (90% of emergency response in 6 minutes or less).

Currently Station No. 4 is staffed by a quint (4 personnel) and a medic unit (2 personnel) 24/7.  The city’s hazardous materials unit is located at this station.

Station History:

The land and barn structure was donated to the city by a developer in 1982.  At the time of donation the surrounding residential area was advised that if the building use was ever changed from a fire station the new use would be compatible with the neighborhood.  Currently the station houses a Quint, Medic Unit and Hazardous Materials Unit.  A total of six (6) firefighters staff this station on a daily basis.

Construction:

The building consisted of a two story “Stone Barn”.  In 1982 the building was renovated and an apparatus area added to accommodate firefighter living areas and an apparatus garage.  The upper living area consists of 654 sq feet with two dormitories (bedrooms), two (2) full baths, laundry room and locker room.  The ground level consists of 1100 sq feet comprised of an office, day room, kitchen, dining area and half bath.  There is approximately 2050 square foot apparatus area plus 20 square foot of storage.

Historical Considerations:

The Historic Resources Commission will be considering listing this property on the Lawrence Registry of Historic Places this fall.

Parking:

Parking is generally limited to nine (9) off street parking spaces.

Zoning:

Currently RS2—Residential.
