City Hall

PO Box 708

Lawrence, KS 66044

Dear Mayor Highberger and Lawrence City Commissioners,

As you may be aware, Lawrence lost a friend and important local figure when Tim Griffith passed away earlier this month.  Tim was employed by Liberty Hall at the corner of 7th and Massachusetts Street for at least 20 years and in that time became inexorably linked to the business and to the corner.

Tim loved the vitality, culture, and community that Liberty Hall brought to Lawrence and to his life.  Using Liberty Hall as a tool, he provided opportunities for local organizations, charities, people, and businesses to reach out to their communities for solace and for celebration.

Included below are a few of the many comments posted to the Lawrence Journal World website upon news of Tim’s passing:

·         He was always really cool, he let me in to see the Boom Town rats when the show was sold out, cause he knew I really wanted to see them and couldn't afford it. He would always stop and see how you were, and he would remember what seems like everything you had ever talked about.

·         Tim played a big part in the best night of my life so far--my wedding reception in 1994. Tim made sure things were just right for us and that we had no worries about using Liberty Hall for our special night. It's rare these days to find somebody who cares that much about customers. Although we don't get to Lawrence much anymore, I always figured I would see Tim somewhere downtown when we did get there. My heart goes out to his friends, family and employees.

·         I had only spoken and worked around Tim a few times at Liberty Hall. When I was there though, he went out of his way to be extra kind and make sure I was more than comfortable. That and his overly kind nature left a big impression on my soul. It's not often that you meet people like him. When you do, you know you will remember them for a lifetime. Tim, you are one that will be missed by many. Peace be with you. Glad to have met you, truly.

·         It would be difficult to imagine Lawrence without Liberty Hall and it's so hard to think of Liberty Hall without Tim. He was such a great supporter of everything uniquely downtown Lawrence. Thanks for all you did, Tim. And thanks for being Tim.

As a tribute to Tim and to the impact that he had on the local community, we would like to place a bronze casting of Tim’s boot prints in the sidewalk near the parking meter where Tim could often be found smoking cigarettes and visiting with passersby.  The edges of the marker would be flush with the sidewalk with the boot imprint going below the plane of the pavement.

I am requesting to be included on the soonest possible City Commission Meeting agenda in order to receive approval of the installation of this marker and for guidance on proper procedures and channels to go through to see this memorial to its successful completion.  Please contact me with questions.

Thank you very much for your time,
