Recognition

Lawrence, Kansas

WHEREAS:   James V. Owens has made outstanding contributions to the Lawrence community since first moving here to attend the University of Kansas, and after having served in the Navy Air Transport Command during World War II, returned to Lawrence and operated Owens Flower Shop from 1946 to 1973, and

WHEREAS:   Jim Owens has served the Lawrence community with terms on the City Recreation Commission, the City Commission including a term as Mayor, the Human Relations Commission, and as President of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce and President of the USD497 School Board, and

WHEREAS:   Jim Owens was honored in 1969 with the Sertoma Club’s Service to Mankind Award and the Lawrence Kiwanis Club’s Substantial Citizen Award, and was awarded the Outstanding Leadership and Achievement in Business Award by Baker University, and

WHEREAS:   Jim Owens is the only known individual to have served as Mayor, President of the Chamber of Commerce, and President of the School Board in Lawrence history, and has recently celebrated his 90^th birthday;  

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Dennis “Boog” Highberger, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby recognize
