Terry Riordan, Chair
Lawrence-Douglas County Metropolitan Planning Commission
6 East 6th Street
Lawrence, KS 66044
Dear Terry:
Attached is a letter and drawings I am sending to the Lawrence City Commission concerning text amendments on the 6th Street 50’ setback. We are requesting the Commission repeal this super setback subdivision regulation.
I understand that a Planning Sub-Committee has now been formed to review gateway issues including the 50’ setback on 6th Street. We do not want to usurp the planning process, but do not believe this particular issue requires sustained study. Nor do we believe that its resolution should await a more comprehensive study of other gateway issues.
If a 225-250’ corridor is required, such a requirement should be accomplished by affirmative action for sound planning reasons, not by default in continuing a regulation which is no longer needed. Normal setbacks can now preserve the 200’ corridor intended and created in 1990.
The matter is on the November 29th agenda, if your committee would like to provide input to the Commission on our request for repeal of the extraordinary setback.
Sincerely,
Dan Watkins
