Proclamation

Lawrence, Kansas

 

 

WHEREAS:   Public transportation in the City of Lawrence, Kansas is making a difference improving the quality of life and economic well-being of all its citizens by providing over 1.5 million rides since transit service began five years ago; and

 

 WHEREAS: Citizens seeking increased mobility such as: students, seniors, people with disabilities, and individuals without automobiles recognize the benefits of public transportation and use it to gain access to jobs, schools, medical facilities, and other fundamental services; and,

 

WHEREAS:   Public transportation enables people from all walks of life to maintain independence to access opportunities that allow them to accomplish what is important to them, making the community stronger and more vibrant; and

 

WHEREAS:   Public transportation helps lead our community toward its goals and policies of increasing mobility, reducing traffic congestion, protecting the environment, conserving energy, and providing for the health, safety, and security of its citizens; and

 

WHEREAS:   The Lawrence Transit System has demonstrated exemplary service by providing safe, clean, and reliable public transportation and by receiving multiple Awards of Excellence from the Federal Transit Administration; and

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Dennis “Boog” Highberger, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim Friday, December 16, 2005 as

 

“Try Transit Day”

 

and call upon all citizens to support public transportation and ride the “T” on Friday by riding the “T” for free to celebrate our transit system’s fifth anniversary.
