Lawrence Douglas County Planning Commission Attn: Lisa Pool
We have received notice about the smoking patio planned for the west side outdoor area of the Crosstown Tavern located at 1910 Haskell Avenue. Out property at 1111 E. 19th Street spans the entire west side of this shopping area, in which the tavern is located. Our concerns regarding this plan are as follows:
1. Patrons regularly wander on to our property, including a late night visit at our front door by a very inebriated individual who banged on the door and attempted to gain entry to our home. They also come across our property line to drink and take part in other activities (we recently removed a mattress and several used condoms).
2. When the tavern's back door is open the music is very loud, which is especially intrusive when trying to go to sleep. We have had neighbors with small children who also have expressed concern about the noise. With patrons using the back door to get to the patio, the noise would be a constant annoyance.
3. It would seem to us that tavern employees would not be able to monitor the smoking area in the rear of the business as they are the front of the building where most such patios are located. The front is an area that is much less intrusive to the neighborhood.
4. As owners of property that is on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as the State and Lawrence Registries, we are absolutely opposed to the extension of this business to the outdoors, which we see as basically bringing the bar closer to our property. We request that this proposed project be reviewed by the Historic Preservation officials within the City Government.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. We would be glad to be involved in any discussion regarding the approval of this project.
