Re:

KDOT Regional Transportation Workshop

On November 30, 2006, staff will be attending a KDOT Regional Transportation Workshop as part of KDOT’s efforts to update the state’s long range transportation plan (see attached KDOT letter).  The current Kansas Transportation Program (CTP) is ending in 2009 and KDOT has scheduled a series of workshops to “establish an effective, successful vision for our transportation future”.

The workshop is divided into two sessions:

·     During the morning session, KDOT seeks input on the current and future needs of aviation, transit rail, state highways, local roads, bike and pedestrian transportation.  This is intended to be a broad policy-level discussion not focused on specific projects in this area.  In addition to learning KDOT’s projections for transportation funding, staff will provide information (see the attached draft letter) outlining Lawrence’s predicted transportation needs and the relationship of those needs to local economic development.

·     The afternoon session will allow for discussion of possible regional highway projects for which KDOT should begin preliminary design work.  Staff understands that this will be an opportunity to maximize the limited funds available during the remainder of the existing CTP.

Commission Action.  Staff seeks direction and/or input from the City Commission on this topic.
