RE:

Winter 06-07 Snow Report

During the winter of 2006-2007 the City of Lawrence experienced five (5) storm events that required Street Maintenance crews to plow and treat city streets. Crews were placed on two 12-hour shifts during these events resulting in significant overtime. A summary of resources used during the five events follows.

                                                Amt Used                            Cost

Labor                                        7,632 hrs                         $181,915

Material                                     7,100 Tons                      $113,967

Equipment Charges                                                           $  98,314

Total Cost For 5 Events                                                      $394,196

As a result of these events salt supplies have been depleted. One salt dome is completely empty and the other is very low. (See photos below.) Staff estimates it will cost approximately $50,000 to replenish the salt supply before next winter season.

During breaks in the weather and since the last storm event, crews have been focusing on pothole patching throughout the city. Multiple crews have been assigned for several weeks to address the patching required after these severe freeze-thaw cycles. During the month of January a total of 1894 locations were patched. Street sweeping to remove sand is also underway.
