Subject: Comment on Left Turn Lane Proposal
Chuck,
My wife and I are completely for the suggested changes. Safety needs to come first and that portion of Iowa is really dangerous for people making left turns onto the side streets, except at Harvard. We assume that the Harvard Stop signal would switch to left-turn arrows instead of "yield on green." Otherwise only one, or perhaps two, cars can turn during peak traffic hours. Is this correct?
Sorry we can't make the meeting.

Subject: Iowa Street improvement
My wife and I appreciate and support the proposal from Harvard to
University on Iowa. For more than 40 years we have lived in Lawrence
and have been concerned when we would be driving south and wish to turn
on to University Drive -- lest we be rear ended or cause a following
vehicle to swerve to avoid us. To date we have been fortunate and
never have had experience. Basically, without the left-turn lane our
driving has caused the major road to become narrowed, deprived of one
of its lanes.
We understand the point made by neighbors that 15th Street deserves
improvement -- but that does not eliminate the problems on Iowa.
Thank you for giving us an audience and we hope this improvement will
proceed.

Dear Charles,
My husband and I would like to voice two votes against this plan, due to
the certainty of significant traffic increases through our already busy
neighborhood streets.
Thank you,

Subject: Iowa Left Turn onto University
Dear Mr. Soules,
Thank you for visiting with me earlier in your
office
and for the notification of the Tuesday 3/27 meeting at City Hall.
I have questions about the number of accidents on Iowa.
Unfortunately, archived stories at LJW are no longer available without
an account, so I am calling this up from memory
48 accidents in the last TWO years.
This is rather like a George Carlin routine reporting a
"Partial score just in -- KU 59"
With no information about the # of accidents on Iowa from
the Turnpike entrance/exit to the 37th street bypass, it is
difficult to interrupt the LJW headlines of
"Notorious for collisions" and "Accident prone" and
'if city engineers can convince neighbors'
'city planners trying to build support for......"
Iowa Street Statistics
Why a two year period?
How many accidents occurred on the entire route?
Break down to turnpike to Harvard
Harvard to 15th
15th to 21
21 to 37th
When do these accidents occur?
Are a large percentage on
football, graduation, orientation KU weekends?
during bad weather - at night?
due to speeding, inattentive driving, etc.?
Whom do these accidents involve?
How serious are they?
I recognize that there will be a left turn lane at University.
I ask for this information, that I may clarify my own
thinking and reasoning.
Thanks,
