CALL TO ORDER

 

The monthly meeting of the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Board was held Monday,

February 19, 2007.  Chair Donna Bell called the meeting to order.

Gladys Sanders moved that the January Health Board minutes be approved.  Carl McElwee provided the second and the motion passed. 

 

 

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

 

Finalize recommendations for Health Board vacancies

 

The Board will forward names of possible appointees to the City and County for consideration.

 

 

ACTIVITY AND FINANCIAL/VOUCHER REPORTS

 

Sherri Vaughn moved that the Board accept the financial report for January.  Carl McElwee provided the second and the motion passed.

 

Gladys Sanders moved that the Board accept the activity reports for January.  Sherri Vaughn provided the second and the motion passed.

 

 

NEW BUSINESS

 

Recommendations on policy for adult immunizations

 

Barbara Schnitker, Director of Nurses, and DeeAnne Schoenfeld, Immunization Charge Nurse, presented a proposal to the Board for expanding the number of vaccines available through the Health Department for adults.  The proposed changes would be consistent with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations for adult immunizations.  Sherri Vaughn moved that the Health Department expand criteria beyond travel/school requirements for vaccines provided to adults based on CDC recommendations and add HPV and Varicella to the list of vaccines requiring payment at time of service and to continue to provide tetanus, pneumonia and

 

 

 

influenza vaccines to adults regardless of ability to pay.  Gladys Sanders provided the second and the motion passed.

 

Air Quality Advisory Committee meeting recommendation

 

Bert Rowell, Health Board Liaison to the Air Quality Advisory Committee, reviewed with the Board 2006 air quality findings from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and presented committee recommendations related to air quality monitoring in Douglas County.  The Board requested that staff prepare a report to the City and County as well as a letter to KDHE recognizing their past support of air quality monitoring in Douglas County.

 

 

Director’s Report

 

1.      Dan Partridge updated the Board regarding individuals in the community he has met with to introduce himself and share his future vision for the Health Department. 

    

2.      Dan Partridge discussed with the Health Board the possibilities for a one-half day Board Retreat with management staff to be held in April, 2007.  He also recommended contracting with Marvin Stottlemire, Assistant Director, KU Public Management Center, as the facilitator.  The Board Retreat was approved by consensus of the Board.

 

3.      Dan Partridge stated that he would like the Health Department program Directors and Coordinators to participate in a one-day collaborative leadership training using Suzanne Hawley, Associate Professor at KU Medical Center -Wichita, as the contracted facilitator.  Approval was received by consensus of the Board.

 

4.      Karina Jones, R.N., accepted the position of Maternal Child Health Nurse/Case Manager and will begin on March 12, 2007.

 

 

Other New Business

 

1.      The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Health Board will be Monday, March 26, 2007.
