RE:

Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program

Please place this item on the regular agenda of the July 24, 2007, City Commission meeting.

The Police Department is prepared to submit an application for the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program. The application itself must be typed into an online form, but the associated problem statement, budget, and draft Memorandum of Understanding are attached.

This is a grant the Police Department has successfully applied for in the past. The Police Department is requesting $57,000 to be used to enhance forensic capabilities of Lawrence Kansas Police Department and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department through the purchase of additional equipment and intermediate to advance level training. Partnership with the Sheriff’s Department is a required component of the grant program. There is no local match required for the grant.

Prior to submittal of the grant application, an opportunity for public comment must be provided. The Police Department requests that the City Commission hold a public hearing regarding this grant application during their July 24, 2007, meeting.

Action:           Hold public hearing on Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant application by the Lawrence Kansas Police Department. Authorize the Police Department to submit the grant application.
