Proclamation

Lawrence, Kansas

 

 

WHEREAS:   Lord Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Boys Scouts, inaugurated the Scouting movement with a camping event for a small group of twenty boys on England’s Brownsea Island on August 1, 1907; and

 

WHEREAS:   The Scouting movement has grown from that simple beginning to include current participation of more than 28 millions boys and girls in more than 200 countries around the world; and

 

WHEREAS:   The Lawrence community has had an active Scouting program for over eighty years and is currently home to seven Boy Scout troops, twelve Cub Scout packs, and six Venture crews, involving more than 1,125 youth and adult leaders; and

 

WHEREAS:   The Scouting movement is celebrating its Centennial Anniversary Day worldwide with a “Scouting Sunrise” rededication event on Wednesday, August 1, 2007;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sue Hack, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim August 1, 2007, the 100th Anniversary of the Scouting Movement, as

 

“SCOUTING SUNRISE DAY”

 

in the City of Lawrence, as local Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venture Scouts rededicate themselves to the ideals of the movement as it enters its second century, and call upon the citizens to join in honoring the youth and adult leaders of Lawrence participating in the Scouting program for their service to the community, their development of youth leadership skills, and their dedication to the character-building values embodied in the Cub Scout Promise, the Boy Scout Oath and Law, and the Venturing Oath and Code.
