Lawrence, Kansas
WHEREAS: The Lawrence Public Library and the Friends of the Lawrence Public Library support and promote literacy; and
WHEREAS: For eight years, the above agencies have supported Read Across Lawrence, a program to encourage all Lawrence residents to read the same book at the same time and gather to discuss it; and
WHEREAS: The 2007 book selection is Revolutionary Heart: The Life of Clarina Nichols and the Pioneering Crusade for Women’s Rights, by Diane Eickhoff; and
WHEREAS: This book tells the story of an important historical figure who lived in Douglas County during the Territorial period and was the only woman to attend the Wyandotte constitutional convention; and
WHEREAS: Numerous copies of this book are available at the Lawrence Public Library and throughout the City; and programs relating to the book are scheduled from September 19 through October 14, including a talk and first person portrayal of Nichols by the author and several book discussions;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sue Hack, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim September 19 – October 14, 2007 to be
and encourage all residents to read and participate in one or more public discussions about Revolutionary Heart: The Life of Clarina Nichols and the Pioneering Crusade for Women’s Rights, by Diane Eickhoff.
