Snow Removal a Joint Effort among City Departments
During and following winter weather events many City employees from various departments work to clear roads, paths and other areas for safe travel. The snow event of February 5-6 produced over five inches in snow and drifts that exceeded twelve inches. The Street Division worked all night and began plowing around 2:00 a.m. Wednesday morning to have the major streets in fair condition by the time the morning commute arrived.
In addition to the Street Division, many other departments have significant snow removal responsibilities. The Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for downtown parking lots, recreation paths all over the community, internal park roads, park facilities, recreation centers and many sidewalks adjacent to parks and City facilities. The Building and Structures Division of Public Works removes snow from several City facilities including City Hall (a cooperative effort with Parks and Recreation), the Investigations and Training Center, the Community Health Building and the airport. The inspection staff also picked up shovels and assisted in snow removal efforts with the Building and Structures staff.
Every department and division (including Utilities, Fire and Medical, and Traffic) is responsible for snow removal efforts at their own facilities and adjacent public areas. The Utilities Department also provides significant assistance to Public Works efforts by providing equipment and staff. On Wednesday night the Street Division and Utilities Department made a concentrated joint effort to remove snow downtown. Please see the attached photos.
