EXHIBIT A
SCHEMATIC DESIGN
The goal of this first phase is to develop concepts for the interpretive programs of the visitors center, budgets and timelines for their development and implementation. Tasks would be:
§ Initial Meetings: Initial informal meetings and conversations to debrief the Client’s conceptual thinking to date, and discuss intended audiences, uses, and design opportunities and constraints. We would also want to spend time understanding your vision for how the space will operate, how frequently it expects to change, and who the different audiences are and what they may expect.
§ Content survey: DMI provides an overview of available support collections and stories, inventory of existing and planned “interpretive tourism equities” in the 41-county area,
§ Thumbnails: we will develop thumbnail, iterative explorations as a means of discussing development concepts, and visitors experience among ourselves and with you. During this time we would also be coordinating content directions with Freedom’s Frontiers’ designated historians, to make sure that the design ideas are congruent with the area’s rich history.
§ 85% Review: We would then submit an 85% completion package for your review, so that Destination Management, Freedom’s Frontier board, architect, and interested parties could comment on the ideas at an early stage and we would have time to respond to those suggestions.
§ ROM Budget and Schedule: EAI would then provide ROM (Rough Order of Magnitude) figures for budgets and schedules for subsequent Design Development and Implementation. As part of the budget determinations, Client and Designer agree to design fees for subsequent work. Since the ultimate scope of the project is unknown, design fees cannot be set at this time. However, within the industry, design fees generally run around 25% of turnkey exhibit costs.
Final deliverables for this phase include:
§ Written narrative of the visitor’s experience
§ Schematic design drawings
§ Performance specs for interactives
§ Budget estimates
§ Schedule
§ Next Steps
Fee for Schematic Design stage: $50,000
DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
Design Development is when we begin to truly define the visitor experience -- what will it look, feel, and/or sound like? This phase will include:
§ Input Schedule: Establish due dates for input from Destination Management and Freedom’s Frontier stakeholders.
§ Script Development: Research is assimilated into a comprehensive exhibit script.
§ Design of Exhibit Elements: We will create exhibit drawings showing exhibit dimensions and elevations; define the treatment of interpretive graphics and exhibit text; and develop treatments for audio-visual and interactive components.
§ Coordination of Design with Architectural Program: We will supply the building architect with exhibit requirements for lighting levels, exhibit security, electrical and cabling requirements, and any structural support.
§ Media Coordination: Sound and image source material are identified. Media use rights and delivery schedules are negotiated for source materials. Rights-of-use for all copyrighted images would have to be secured. While NARA has the rights to use reproductions of images from their collection in on-site exhibitions, that right does not extend to off-site installations, such as the exhibits contemplated herein. It is our understanding that Freedom’s Frontier staff will undertake to secure these rights, which includes identifying rights-holders, contacting them to negotiate fees, making payments and securing high-resolution, reproducible images in a timely manner (that would not delay subsequent camera-ready art and production tasks).
§ Progress Reviews Interim reviews are held with the client based on a mutually agreeable schedule. The review includes schedule and cost estimate updates.
§ Final Design: Finished script, design, schedule and budget is produced. Once the exhibit design work is reviewed, it is amended and refined. Final design will include plans and elevations of all exhibit areas, exhibit treatments and finishes, script and treatments for audio-visuals and interactive programs, cost estimates and a production schedule. These are presented to the client for review.
Final Deliverables include:
• A final content outline with complete artifact list
• Appearance (design) drawings
• AV and special effects scripts
• Exhibit copy
IMPLEMENTATION
EAI will monitor the fabrication and installation work of the Exhibit Fabrication firm.
§ Camera-Ready Artwork; While the graphic look and feel of the exhibits is a part of the exhibit design scope, we prefer to take on the additional services of final art production, to ensure a tight fit between design intent and the fabricator’s graphic production process.
§ Fabrication and Installation: Exhibit fixture fabrication and installation would be performed by Exhibit Associates, under direct contract to FFNHA: we would monitor their work for quality control and adherence to design intent.
§ Interactive/Media Production: We have found that there is considerable cost savings and better creative control if we work internally to develop the AV/Interactive systems. At the client’s election, this production would be done as an Additional Service.
