RE:

Lease Extension for The Shelter, Inc.

 

On December 18, 2012, the Shelter, Inc. requested and the City Commission authorized, preparation of a lease extension for City property located at 342 Missouri.  Since 1982, the City has leased this building to the Shelter.  The current agreement expires January 1, 2013.  Staff recommends another five-year extension of the lease, with the remaining terms of the agreement unchanged.  The Shelter, Inc. pays $100 per month in rent for the facility.

 

The Shelter, Inc. provides emergency residential care for children placed with them following action by law enforcement or the court.  In addition to providing emergency housing for children, the Shelter, Inc. also provides crisis intervention to families and refers families and children to other community agencies, as needed.  The Shelter, Inc. identifies emergency placement options in the community for children, if there is a significant risk to a child or the community.  The Shelter, Inc. provides Juvenile Offender Services and other family services.  The mission of the agency is, “to improve the lives of children and families. We serve children from all over the state of Kansas in our home community of Lawrence.”

 

An Extension of Lease Agreement extending the lease from January 2013 through January 2018 is attached. 

 

Action Requested:

Authorize the City Manager to execute the Extension of Lease Agreement with the Shelter, Inc., for City owned property commonly located at 342 Missouri.
