RE:

Resolution Establishing Cultural District Task Force

 

Background:

The City Commission, on February 12, 2013, established a cultural district and authorized the Mayor to establish a cultural district task force. The cultural arts district is bound by 15th Street on the south, the Burroughs Creek Trail on the east, the Kansas River on the north and Kentucky Street on the west.

 

Task Force Membership:

This task force will be composed of seven Lawrence citizens as recommended by the Mayor and appointed by the City Commission. The membership composition will include two members from the Lawrence Cultural Arts Commission, two members from the East Lawrence Neighborhood Association, one from the Lawrence Arts Center, one from Downtown Lawrence, Inc., and one individual appointed to represent the public at-large.

 

Task Force Goals:

This task force will focus on identifying three (3) cultural district models that combine private, public and grant funding to support improvements to the newly-established cultural district, as well as initiating discussion on a broader community-wide cultural plan.

 

Timeline:

Resolution No. 7017 establishes a task force to focus on identifying three cultural district models that combine private, public and grant funding to support improvements to the City’s designated cultural district, as well as initiating a broader community-wide cultural plan. This task force will report on its findings and recommendations to the City Commission by October 31, 2013.

 

Action Requested:

Adopt Resolution No. 7017 to establish a cultural district task force.
