Approve Special Event Permit, SE-18-00228, for Douglas County Relay for Life, a fundraiser presented by the American Cancer Society, at 6100 Rock Chalk Drive, listed from 12:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. (with request to keep lights on until 12:15 a.m.) on June 8, 2018. The walking portion of the relay will begin at 6:00 p.m. Submitted by the American Cancer Society for City of Lawrence, property owner of record. |

Executive Summary: |
The Douglas County Relay for Life will be a six-hour walking relay where teams compete in support of cancer patients. Teams will set up a themed campsite and continue their fundraising efforts by collecting donations for food, goods, games, and activities. There will be food trucks, raffle/silent auction, children’s games and a ceremony honoring cancer patients and survivors.
The applicant expects about 325 Relay participants and between 500-1,000 attendees.
The applicants will provide porta-potties. There are also restrooms within the track and field facility. Event organizers, participants, and spectators will park in the lots east of Rock Chalk Lane. The applicants have indicated there will be no alcohol sales or KU merchandise sales.
The applicants have requested the lights remain on until 12:15 a.m. A notice to all property owners within 1,000’ of Rock Chalk Park was mailed on 05/14/2018.
Relay for life donations will help the American Cancer Society fund cancer research, critical patient services, and education and prevention initiatives. |
