Lawrence, Kansas

WHEREAS:   The people of Lawrence, Kansas are deserving of good health; and

WHEREAS:   Human milk is the preferred and most appropriate first food for infants, adapting over time to meet the changing needs of the growing child and is safe, reliable, and renewable; and

WHEREAS:   Breastfeeding is a proven primary prevention strategy, protecting both infants and mothers from a host of chronic and acute diseases and conditions and building a foundation for life-long health and wellness; and

WHEREAS:   Employers who provide workplace lactation support experience an impressive return on investment, including lower health care costs, absenteeism, and turnover rates, as well as improved morale, job satisfaction, and productivity; and

WHEREAS:   Lawrence continues to work toward a culture where breastfeeding is the norm. Promoting, protecting and supporting families by examining the role of social, economic and environmental factors that impact breastfeeding.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Stuart Boley, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim August 1 – 7, 2018 to be

“World Breastfeeding Week”

and encourage all citizens to support breastfeeding families wherever and whenever possible.
