City graduates first class of “Green Business Leaders”

Twelve downtown businesses participated in Lawrence’s first ever Green Business Leaders Program. These businesses attended classes on energy efficiency solutions, tracked their energy use, and planned projects to improve their buildings. Westar Energy and GBA Architects + Engineers provided a free on-site, walk-through energy assessment for each participating business in March. Participants received a report summarizing the energy conservation measures they could undertake in their buildings to cut operating costs and energy usage. If each business made the changes to their buildings recommended in their energy assessment reports, they could save $26,000/yr in reduced energy costs, and save the energy equivalent of not burning 22,000 gallons of gasoline or the equivalent energy usage of 30 homes.
