Executive Summary: |
Each year, during winter operations, the City of Lawrence Public Works Department utilizes on average 7,000 tons of de-icing salt. This accounts for salt use in sand/salt mix, liquid pretreatment (brine), straight salt applications and use of salt by other departments within the City.
The 2017/2018 winter season resulted in 11 events and accounted for 6,400 tons of de-icing salt consumption.
Our goal is to maintain a stockpile of 10,000 tons of de-icing salt. This will ensure that even in a bad winter year we will have enough de-icing salt on hand to maintain the expected level of service desired by this community. The purchase of 3,500 tons of de-icing salt will resupply the City’s stockpile to 10,000 tons. The need this year for restocking was due to less of a surplus of de-icing salt at the beginning of this winter season.
The 2018 department budget for de-icing salt is $245,000.00. |
