Executive Summary: |
Solid Waste Division had identified the replacement of a 9-yard refuse truck as part of the 2018 CIP. The current collection practice utilizes two different small trucks on neighborhood streets and cul-de-sacs with limited space to collect trash and recycling separately. Staffing levels often lead to one staff member shuffling between trucks to avoid cross contamination of recycled product and refuse material. This can be alleviated by a 12-yard dual pack unit that has the capacity to handle two materials in a split body, decreasing the need for staff to shuffle between trucks. Solid Waste and Central Maintenance have evaluated equipment and reviewed efficiencies gained by non-traditional methods of waste collection. Solid Waste believes transitioning to this type of unit will gain efficiencies and enhance staff productivity. This change in type of equipment will increase the purchase cost over what the estimated CIP projection identified in the current CIP plan.
This is the final replacement in the 2018 Solid Waste truck replacement schedule, budgeted and included in the 2018 CIP. Year-to-date savings from 2018 truck purchases enable the city to afford the additional cost of this specialty unit. Please see attached table of 2018 truck purchases for a comparison of budgeted to actual expenditures related to solid waste truck acquisition.
